Introduction

Have you heard of the game Midnight Suns? Midnight Suns is a tactical role-playing game developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K that was released back in 2022. It is a game featuring characters from the Marvel Comics such as the Midnight Suns, the Avengers, and X-Men.

While it wasn’t released too far back, it is a game not mentioned a lot by gamers and fans of Marvel. It is not brought up in conversations and is even neglected by the gaming community because of looking like a mobile game. It is unfortunate, because there were interesting ideas and gameplay mechanics.

The entire game revolves around Hunter uniting all the superheroes together and lead them to defeat Lilith, preventing the ancient prophecy from being fulfilled. While Hunter is on his or her journey, the player must take part in the card-based tactical battles to defeat Hydra and its allies.

As The Hunter, players must make choices, develop all the heroes’ skills, and take part in missions to stop Lilith from fulfilling the prophecy. The prophecy is about Lilith reawakening Chthon, and the only one that can prevent Chthon’s reawakening is Hunter.

In this article, this will cover three reasons Marvel’s Midnight Suns is underrated and deserve more recognition of being a great game. This article will explore its unique gameplay, interaction with the superheroes, and the card-based tactical battles.

While exploring the region, players can also find plants to craft new combat items and discover chests placed around the location. These chests will give out new items, such as combat items, skins, and cards. Then, players get to find havens, where Hunter and the others can hang out. They can get to do certain activities, such as stargazing at night or go out fishing while having a conversation about something personal.

These conversations help build relationships with the others and learn more about the superheroes. It can be about Hunter’s relationship with his mother, or it can be just about life. By hanging out, players get to learn more about superheroes such as Iron Man and Captain America.

In The Abbey, a spirit named Agatha Harkness can be found near her shrine and she will send Hunter out to complete trials. While completing the trials, players are given chances to learn about Hunter’s history and more about the others as well. This is another addition to the gameplay, increasing the content positively. It is not just about heading to the next story mission. It also about exploring The Abbey, gain new abilities, and learn about its history.

Form and Develop Relationships with Heroes

A vast difference between this game versus many other turn-based strategy games is that the player can have lots of interactions with the superheroes. In many video games, it is known that the AI will stand around on the map, doing either nothing or performing the same activity over and over. They might just carry boxes from one place to another or they will walk from spot to another one.

In Marvel’s Midnight Suns, the superheroes do not just stand or wander mindlessly around The Abbey. Instead, players can take part in activities, converse with the superheroes, and learn more about them.

Complete Activities

Before every mission, the player is given several chances to interact with the others around The Abbey. When characters have something above their head highlighted, the player can interact and take part in whatever activity. Sometimes, someone will just chat with Hunter about something such as life, their background, Lilith, or random topics.

This gives the opportunity for the player (and Hunter) to learn more about the heroes such as their personality, what they like, and their thoughts about a subject. If players decide to hang out with someone such as Captain America, then players get to learn and understand more about his perspective on certain subjects.

In Midnight Suns, the heroes such as Captain America and Iron Man will converse with the player about something. They will talk about certain subjects, such as their history, Lilith, life, and their experience with something in the past. This ends up developing the characters a lot more and players get to learn more about them.

Learning more about them really helps with liking the superheroes a lot, knowing they aren’t just a generic character with a stereotypical personality. Each superhero has a unique personality and outlook on certain subjects.

Players can understand why someone is the way they are or what are their thoughts about a topic such as Hunter facing his mother or about a past situation. While trying to stop Lilith from fulfilling the prophecy, players get plenty of opportunities developing their understanding of the characters’ motivations and beliefs.

Some heroes also have some type of side project, such as the Book Club and The Shop. When players want to take a break from missions or explore other content, these side activities are an excellent way to do something with the others.

In the Marvel movies, movie watchers don’t get to understand so much about the superheroes and it rarely gets covered. Midnight Suns explores the superheroes (and villains) a lot more. These side activities give much more depth about what they are like and players get to experience being with their favorite superheroes.

Develop Friendship Level

Another feature is that the player can develop their friendship with the superheroes. When doing activities and conversing with them, players develop or erode their friendships. Since everyone has their own unique beliefs and personality, players will must take these factors into consideration.

To increase friendship level, players must understand the characters and then make choices which come up during conversations. Some superheroes will like Hunter’s opinion on certain situations and subjects. Some won’t. There is also the light alignment in this game, which it is like Mass Effect’s system.

There are certain choices that provide either dark light or light points. Moving towards a certain dialogue and it is very easy to understand. Making Dark light choices is about making choices that are more unsettling and can anger someone, even if it is the truth. White light is more about being friendly and positive.

Card-Based Tactical Battles

Midnight Suns features a different type of battles compared to many other strategy games. Its gameplay is not traditional, but it is still an enjoyable game to play. The game features card-based tactical battles, where players fight enemies using a deck of cards provided and using the environment as well. Each superhero has their own unique set of cards to use against enemies and can do several actions such as:

· Heal friendlies

· Attack enemies using special moves

· Grab enemies and throw them against an object, dealing more damage

· Summon creatures

Before continuing a mission, players are required to build a team of heroes before proceeding. In Midnight Suns, every hero has their own unique fighting style compared to others. Captain America and Wolverine are more the tank class, while Spiderman is more agile when fighting enemies. This is important to plan, strategize and win battles.

For battles, the game provides a great combination of mechanics to use to defeat their enemies. One way is using the environment to the players’ advantage. In every map, there are objects and surroundings that can damage or completely take out enemies:

· Heroes can take objects and throw them at someone

· Enemies can be knocked off the edge, taking them out

· Knock down a light post on someone

Thanks to the environment interactions, it is not just about Captain America throwing his shield or Spiderman shotting his webs at enemies. The environment can be a very effective way to deal damage against enemies and offer much more flexibilities.

Then, there are the cards themselves. Before starting a mission, players will pick a set of cards that heroes can use during battles. When in battles, players are given a random deck of cards and must choose the right ones to win the battles.

What makes this system very good is that the battles are not predictable and keep the game spontaneous. Players will have to think and decide which tactics to use to complete objectives, meaning players cannot just slap on powerful abilities to overpower the enemies. Players must position the heroes carefully and play the right cards tactically to win.

Players must think strategically and plan their moves carefully using the cards handed to them. Players need to consider not only which hero to deploy but also building an effective deck to maximize their strengths. During battles, players must strategically manage their deck and think critically when taking actions.

Not only that, the developers did a great job at showcasing the heroes’ abilities and made the game like watching a movie or a TV show. The heroes all have their iconic abilities, such as Wolverine going around and slashing enemies, or Captain America throwing his shield which bounces from one enemy to the other.

Conclusion

Marvel’s Midnight Suns deserves more recognition in the gaming community for its unique approach to gameplay and having an immersive experience. In a way, it is a hidden gem because of its poor sales and being overlooked by the gaming community. This post sheds some light on the game and its underrated experience.

The game offers a fresh take on the tactical gameplay, setting it apart from the many traditional strategy games. One of the most compelling reasons is the opportunity to develop relationships with the heroes. By allowing players to form meaningful relationships with the heroes, the game enhances the storyline by giving an emotion investment in those relationships.

While the card-based battle system is different, it offers a fresh approach to gameplay mechanics by using cards to win battles. This also encourages players to think more creatively and adapt their tactics on the fly by selecting the right cards or actions. Moreover, the blend of the different mechanics keeps the experience fresh in which keeps the player engaged.

1 Unique Blend of Gameplay

Starting off with the first reason, and it is the game’s unique gameplay. A big difference between this game and other strategy games is that Marvel’s Midnight Suns combine multiple genres into one, creating a unique experience. It is not just about stopping Lilith and taking part in card-based battles. The game offers lots of different aspects, making the gameplay stand out much more.

In the game, Hunter and the others have their base of operations in The Abbey. It is a pocket dimension on the cliffs of Salem, Massachusetts and it is where players manage the superheroes along with engaging in various activities. There are several activities to go to:

· The Yard—to train superheroes and upgrade card abilities

· The Forge—to research new items or upgrades, craft combat items, and open Gamma Coils

· The War Room—to gain new abilities by completing special operations

As players continue with the story, they get to have chances to take part in activities, upgrade superheroes’ abilities, and interact with the heroes. The game really dived deep into several areas, making the experience much more meaningful. These areas include being in clubs and doing activities for fun, such as playing video games with Spiderman or watching movies with Scarlett Witch. Midnight Suns just mixes different gameplays into one game, including:

· Take part in side activities and joining clubs

· Fight in card-based battles

· Form and develop relationships with other superheroes

· Craft combat items and research new items or upgrades

The game covers several bases and offers a very rich experience. Unlike other video games, it does not focus only on one aspect; it also focuses on many aspects of the game. It is not just about completing a mission, have a dialogue with someone, and then move onto the next mission. By blending different gameplay, this helps break up the pace by introducing new objectives or new mechanics to use.

When starting off in The Abbey, the player can interact with the heroes around the area, explore The Abbey, and complete the story or side missions.
